I have had this book on my TBR for absolutely ages now. I only actually remembered it being on there when I noticed that the second book in this series was going to be released at some point soon... which it has already been! So, you know, obviously I had to grab myself a copy. I had seen reviews running around mentioning just how violent this book was etc. But me being me, I kept thinking "It cannot be that bad"... well, I was wrong!I actually really liked Sofia at the beginning of the book. She was reliable and relatable and definitely someone who was the sort of person that could easily become friends with. I loved her wit at times because she just didn't seem like the character who would be that witty... She is one of those, when you get to know her, she is actually much funnier than when you don't know her! I also admired the fact that she didn't join the crowd when they were trying to perform an exorcism on Brooklyn. She was constantly trying to help Brooklyn in secret, eve though she knew that if she was found out by anyone else(especially Riley) she would be next. She seemed brave in way that no one else was. Of course... that all came to an end when we found out what her sin was!! You think you know someone and then you don't!Riley came across as psycho throughout the entire book. You know those religious fanatics you see in zombie movies or wherever? Where they break under the pressure, bow to God, pray all the time, preach - go crazy... well... welcome to Riley! Her religiousness actually bugged me a little bit and I don't understand how anyone would want to be friends with someone who was constantly preaching! I think this was probably the point the author was trying to make, but still! Plus, all the things she did to Brooklyn had me tingling all over... and not in a good way! I felt like I was watching Saw or something similar, when the violence is so much your body tingles and you start shaking the body parts that are being affected int he film/book just to make sure they are all there and nothing has happened to them? yep! My point. Riley = pyscho! Her friends (Grace and Alexis) seem like sheep with Riley. The exorcism sends Alexis over the edge and she starts ripping out her and hair and generally going a little bit mad. Grace also seems to start to change as events unfurl, but she is unreliable. One minute she is trying to help Sofia escape and the next she is with Riley trying to punish Sofia.I think this book probably should have come with a warning about the violence! It is marketed as young adult horror, but it is pretty gory and violent and probably not something someone should read they have issues with that kind of thing. Despite the bone tingling, body shaking thing going on with me, I don't normally have an issues with stuff like that - but I know others that might! So.. probably should have warning issued!I was also not expecting that ending! Like, what?? I wasn't expecting Sofia's sin to be what it was and I was actually kinda shocked and betrayed! You get this idea in your head about someone and then you are completely wrong and it leaves you reeling. I probably should have learnt with Dangerous Girls not to trust anyone in the YA world!!I actually pretty enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading the next instalment. I gave this book 4/5 stars.

I bought this book for two reasons:1. I wanted to better understand what it is to be nonbinary, to gain a sense of what it's like, their lives.2. I wanted to compare the writer's journey's to mine, to see where we overlap, where we don't, and learn from them.As a trans woman I know that I don't need to understand nonbinary people to remain validating of them. I now have a much better and informed understanding. I learned a lot and feel that I can speak to others about what I learned.I thoroughly recommend this book. Each memoir is well written, very readable, and concise. We need more books like this one.

I got an ARC of this book.I spend a lot of my time reading about binary trans identities. That is the world that makes the most sense to me since I am a binary trans person. I lived in Berkeley for a while and absolutely hated it. I figured out it was because the trans space that was so anti-binary that it became a social death sentence to identify binary. I felt erased and hated. I wanted to read this book to start to put some of my own issues with the nonbinary community aside, since I didn't have any issues with nonbinary people or the movement until I lived in Berkeley. I wanted to feel like the trans community was home again, all of it. This book brought me back to the nonbinary community I was used to. One full of power, love, acceptance, and courage. One that acknowledges that being binary isn't sinful, but it just doesn't work for them. One full of questions, lots of thinking, and lots of experimentation. The sort of community that gives me hope for the trans community, that is will one day come together instead of being filled with in-fighting. The book covers really important topics ranging from being trans enough to what a transition looks like to feeling erased by the trans community. All of the feelings I have had throughout my transition being binary. The only difference being I had more support being binary that the nonbinary people in this collection did. I wish I could support them all. I wish I could have been part of the groups they joined trying to find a home. I would have been the first one to welcome them. No trans person should ever wrestle with the idea that they are or are not trans enough. They should never feel like they don't belong in a trans space. We should all support each other. I hope this book finds people who are questioning their gender and their expression. It opens so many doors into what nonbinary could look like and asks so many questions. It will be a great resource for people. The book really hit home for me and taught me so much about a world I only ever got glimpses of through friends and my own understanding of gender. It also affirmed something that has been in the back of my mind for years. It also made me feel more comfortable with my own body. I haven't had bottom surgery. This book made me feel less pressure to have bottom surgery, to conform to the stereotype of a transition. I want bottom surgery, but it opened the door to really question why I want it. Do I want it because that is what I expect trans people to want? Do I want it because it is right for me? This book opens up so many ideas of what it means to be trans. The answer I got was easy: if you feel like you are trans, then you are trans. If you feel nonbinary, you do you. Do whatever sort of transition works for you. Don't be ashamed, don't be afraid, but if you are you are not alone. I know this review was all about my binary gender, but that is the only lens I have to understand the people who told their stories. Their stories are not mine, but they had similar themes as my world. I want to be as confident as the people telling their stories.

I'm not entirely sure what I expected from this, because I saw the title and grabbed an opportunity for some broadening of my mind, some education. I certainly got an education, just not the formal one that one might expect from a book by a university press. I think I got something unique and priceless.The intro to the book was confusing, because I didn't quite clock immediately that the guys named on the cover aren't the authors - they're simply the editors of various people's stories. And, if I am not mistaken, part of the intro was done by Riki Wilchins, whose tone and words I don't love, having read a couple of her works and having reviewed one of them, only to find that she'd taken exception to my words (she's since deleted her comments). I was almost debating not reading on when I saw RW's connection, but I decided to continue, and I am so glad that I did.The book consists of a series of short essays/pieces written by people who are nonbinary. They seemed to range from different ages, races, backgrounds, family settings and I think I enjoyed every single one bar one where it was told as if the author was speaking about themselves in the third person - sorry that I can't recall the name or title.To hear their tales, to learn of their physical and mental journeys, their struggles, their courage and determination was humbling and made me realise how much het-me takes for granted.At the end of the book the editors give us the names of the authors in a kind of glossary, introducing them a tad more, and making me appreciate what I've read even more. Das Buch enthält alle wesentlichen Skalen die man so braucht zum Improvisieren und Komponieren auf der Gitarre. Die Erklärungen sind verständlich, lernen muss man den Inhalt aber trotzdem selbst. Als Gitarrist muss man das aber eh irgendwann machen und dieses Buch ist eine günstige Möglichkeit alles auf einem Fleck zu haben. Einziger Nachteil ist wohl die Bindung, das "Buch" faltet sich ständig von selbst zusammen und man muss es knicken. Bei dem Preis kann man aber auch einfach die Seiten einzeln raus reißen und an die Wand pinnen...Frohes klimpern!

Eine sehr gute Übersicht im handlichen unterwegs-Format (ca. 30cm hoch, aber schmal - sollte in jeden Gigbag passen). Bei einer son zusammengefassten Übersicht kann natürlich ein großer theoretischer Hintergrund keinen Platz finden. Das Büchlein enthält eine gute kurze Einleitung zum Thema (das einem aber schon ein wenig bekannt sein sollte) und bietet dann alles was man braucht um auch unterwegs neue Skalen üben zu können. Ich finds klasse!

Was soll man dazu sagen? Es veranschaulicht die verschiedenen Skalen und Tonleitern. Es werden verschiedene Muster dazu angebgen, so dass man die Leitern gut lernen kann.Was mir nicht so gut gefällt ist das Format. Man kann sich das in etwa wie A6 vorstellen nur halbiert und ans unter Ende addiert. Meiner Meinung nach nicht die beste Form um Tonleitern zu präsentieren und auch nicht die handlichste

Für den "Notenmuffel" gut dargestellt. Erläuterungen über Theorie und Anwendung. Hilft enorm, Eintönigkeit oder Wiederholungen beim Improvisieren zu beheben. Für mich genau der richtige Mix zwischen Banal und Komplex. Kann gut ins tägliche "Training" integriert werden. Kaufempfehlung!

Schön Übersichtlich. Stets ist das Gitarrengriffbrett dargestellt und darauf die Pentatoniken mit schwarzen Punkten, wobei Grundtöne und hinzugefügte Töne markiert wurden.

Ich habe dieses Buch als Errinerungsstütze gekauft, also nicht, um die Skalen zu lernen.Um es immer dabei zu haben einfach genial, im Musiker-Alltag eine unbezahlbare Hilfe.Ein sehr cooles Gimmick, stellen die "exotischen" Skalen am Ende des Buches dar, welche häufig einen Song etwas interessanter machen können!

Das Buch verfügt über eine tolle Übersicht und hat zudem auch noch mehrere "exotische" Skalen im Programm, die man nicht im alltäglichen Spiel verwendet.

Kurze Beschreibungen. Übersichtlich. Und auch Tipps zum Üben dabei. Ich finde es für ein Buch (Heft) unter 5 Euro echt super! Ach ja, Sprache ist Englisch. Aber leicht verständlich.Bin selber kein Anfänger mehr, aber ich denke auch Anfänger kommen damit gut zurecht!

Der Buchdruck ist von guter Qualität, so dass die Fotografien von Margret Bourke-White gut zur Geltung kommen. Der Text ist biografisch informativ, obwohl das "American English" nicht immer einfach zu verstehen ist. Kleiner Wermutstropfen: Die bekannte Fotografie einer über der Skyline von New York fliegenden DC3, die Bourke-White vom Chrysler Building aus der Position des Titelbildes anfertigte, ist leider nicht enthalten.Unabhängig davon ist das Buch aber auf jeden Fall eine Bereicherung für die fotografische Bibliothek.

I didn't know who Margaret Bourke-White was until I received this book as a gift. I have always been interested in photography but never considered it as a career until I read this book. The photos that are in the book are very inspirational. Reading about her life and what she went through to make her dream come true was very interesting. I have had this book for two years and still enjoy looking through her photos.
